“I’m willing to make you a deal,” he goes on, casually. “There is something I want, possibly more than you, and I’m impatient. You get me what I want, and I’ll let you go. That simple.”

“Nothing is that simple,” I mutter. “You will take what you want, and I’ll never be free from you. You’re not going to just let me walk, not until you’ve made it clear that you won’t be fucked over. You’re not that stupid.”

He grins. “You’re right, I’m not, but my men know not to fuck with me. People around town know not to fuck with me. There isn’t a single person that knows my name, who would think to fuck with me, except those bikers of yours but they’re child’s play. I’m not worried about them.”

Oh, but he should be.

While he’s watching them, they’re planning something he won’t see coming.

It would seem he isn’t aware of Mateo, either.

“Again, you’re getting off track. I’m bored, if you’re not going to tell me what your plan is, can you please move, your breath is full on.”

He glares at me, anger making the veins in his temples pop right out. “You better be careful, Poppy. I’m not a nice man and you’re walking a fine line.”

I blink slowly, as if I’m bored. “Seriously, put your dick back in your pants and take a step back, I’m not afraid of you and your little posse.”

He slaps me, so hard my head swings to the side. I’ve been punched before, and that hurt, but this slap is so forceful it has people on the sidewalk stopping with a gasp. My head swims and my ears ring as I slowly face him again, trying to ignore the throbbing pain in my cheek and the tears welling under my eyelids.

“Move on,” he growls to the group walking past, “I’m not the kind of man you want to mess with if you value your life.”

They move on.

He faces me again. “Now, are you going to listen?”

I glare at him.

“Good.”

I didn’t answer, you dick weed.

“Your little bodyguard knows someone of interest to me, someone who I had dealings with in the past. Someone who is working for me but has since changed her mind and is trying to escape my clutches. I want her. She is more value to me than you, but she’s got protection constantly, and I’m not risking anything to get her to play nice.”

I shake my head in confusion. “Becky?” I ask, because that’s the only woman I know that Beckett knows.

“Spot on. Your little friend Becky has been working for me for months, feeding information back while getting screwed by that burly biker. In the last few weeks, she’s been feeding me lies, and I figured it out not too long ago. She’s afraid, and desperate, and she knows what will happen to her when I get my hands on her, and I will get my hands on her. Unfortunately for me, she’s got a very powerful father and a good deal in the way between us, so I need a little help coaxing her out.”

My mind swims as I take in what he’s saying. Becky is working with Rocco? With the cartel? That sweet, expensive looking woman is actually bad news? Beckett would be crushed. I know what this would do to him, to his ego. It would destroy him to know he’s been getting played for months by a woman he’s allowed himself to care about. It would ruin parts of him that wouldn’t come back.

It’s her for me.

That’s what he’s offering.

“How do I know you’d just let me go if I delivered her?” I ask, my face feeling as though it could be swelling, but I won’t touch it in front of him, I won’t show him it hurts.

“I swear it. You don’t trust me, but I keep my word. You deliver her, I’ll let you go. Fair is fair. You’re no use to me, Poppy. I just don’t like being stolen from. Do this, and consider your debt paid, and, the best part is, your man will be all free for you to do whatever you like to.”

I doubt that.

But still, if I do this, then maybe all this can go away for the club, and they’ll forgive me. Especially if it means they don’t have to risk anyone’s lives.

“When?” I ask.

“I’ll let you have your little night off, but when you return home, I want her taken to a location, a location I’ll give you. Once she has been delivered, you’re free to go.”

The guys aren’t planning their attack on Rocco for at least another week, as far as I know, which means I can’t even wait for that to happen. His timeframe gives me no choice, I either do it or the biker club goes in for their attack which could go horribly wrong and start a war, a war that I don’t want to bring upon them considering they’ve protected me, even if I am a prisoner.
