“What flavor was it?” His eyes were still twinkling.

“Uh… Witch’s brew.”

He belly laughed. “How is that a flavor?”

She grinned in response and shrugged. “I don’t know. Ellie won’t share her recipes. Sometimes the flavors don’t make sense.”

“I’ll be sure to get that one then. Thanks for the tip, and thanks for letting me know about my taillight.”

“There’s an auto-parts shop in the same strip.” She spun to the side and pointed back the direction she’d come. “If you take a right at the next intersection, you can’t miss it.”

“Perfect. Thanks again. I guess I’ll see you on Monday.”

“Yes, Sir.” Avery smoothed her hands down her shirt and took a step back. “Well, uh. Okay. See you later.” She turned and hurried back to her car before she could manage to make a bigger fool of herself. “Shit,” she muttered.

As soon as she was inside the cruiser, she glanced at Wyatt. He was grinning wide. “Guess that was our new captain.”

She groaned as he pointed to the computer where he’d run the plates.

“I would have gotten out to join you, but you looked like you were sweating bullets. Figured I’d wait to meet him next week. Was it bad? Was he a jerk?” Wyatt looked concerned now.

Avery shook her head. “No. Not at all. He was very nice.” She pursed her lips, reminding herself to stop talking. Less was more right now.

Chapter Two

“Avery?”

Avery was climbing out of her car in the parking lot of Blaze later that evening when she heard someone call her name. She lifted her gaze to find Tori coming toward her.

Tori looked relieved. She wasn’t alone. Evan, her Daddy, was with her. He was holding her hand, but she was moving faster than him, tugging him along. She was dressed in the cutest dragon costume. Pink with a long tail that Evan was trying to avoid.

He had the usual indulgent smile on his face. The man adored Tori, and Avery was glad Tori had found the perfect Daddy.

“I’m so glad you arrived at the same time as me,” Tori admitted as she looked around the parking lot. “I told Daddy we had to wait for someone else to arrive. I don’t like to go in alone.” She was wringing her fingers together nervously.

Avery knew Tori had been more of a closeted Little when she met Evan, and she found the club to be intimidating. Tori grinned as she looked up and down Avery’s frame. “You make a great scary witch.”

“Yep.” Avery held up the mask that fit over her already painted green skin. It gave her a long warty nose and hairy eyebrows. She hadn’t worn it to drive. It would have obstructed her vision.

“I love it,” Tori exclaimed. “No one is going to know who you are in that.”

Avery nodded as she shut the car door and pulled the mask on over the thick bun. It fit pretty well, but it was going to be hot and it obscured her vision. The truth was she’d only recently reinstated her membership at Blaze after a few years’ hiatus. She wasn’t as nervous around people as Tori, but the thought of having some anonymity for the evening lowered her stress level.

Hopefully no one would hit on her tonight. Even though she was trying to put herself back out there, it was hard. Her previous boyfriend had done a number on her. She didn’t trust easily. Though part of her wished she had the kind of Daddy most of her friends from Blaze had, most of the time she didn’t trust her instincts enough to talk to anyone and get to know them.

Tonight, she would be incognito. “Ready?” she asked.

Evan chuckled. “Tori’s been bouncing off the walls waiting for this costume party all afternoon.”

“Mostly because I was nervous, Daddy,” she pointed out.

He lifted her chin and gave her a kiss. “My Little dragon. Stay with either Daddy or Avery. You’ll be fine.”

“I know. Once I get to the daycare and see all the other Littles, I’ll relax.”

“I know you will.”

Avery followed the two of them inside. Already the club was busy. Ordinarily people tended to show up later than this, but because of the costume party, a lot of patrons had arrived earlier.

“I’m sure there are snacks in the daycare, but would either of you like me to get you a drink from the bar?”

“I’m good, Daddy,” Tori said.

“No, thank you,” Avery stated. Her voice sounded muffled as her top lip couldn’t move properly under the mask. Even that part of her identity was concealed. She felt an odd lightness from knowing she could wander around with her head up tonight. People watch without revealing her identity.

When they reached the daycare, the two of them were bombarded by Ellie, Riley, Lark, Sue, and Daisy. The volume was so loud it was hard to talk over the voices and music.
