FIVE YEARS LATER

Grammy and Quin laugh watching Melissa, my four-year-old niece, swipe bright blue eyeshadow across my face. I’d do anything to make this little girl happy, even make a fool of myself. It’s our usual Sunday dinner, and we’re all sitting out on our back patio. The only person missing is my wife. A few days ago, she came down with a stomach bug and hasn’t been able to shake the symptoms. I ignore the worry gnawing at me and enjoy my time playing with Melissa.

Seth wraps his arms around my sister’s waist and leans over to whisper something in her ear that makes her laugh. Their second child is due any day now, and I’m not going to lie; I’m jealous as hell. When Oakley agreed to marry me, I promised to let her have time to enjoy her career, but I’m starting to run out of patience. The desire to have a child with her is a constant ache eating away at me.

Oakley and I split our time between our homes in Houston and Silver Spoon Falls, and I always clear my schedule at least one day a week to spend time with Melissa. Over the years, Seth, the asshole, grew on me. Kinda like a fucking fungus.

My phone buzzes in my pocket, and I reach down to find a message from my wife.

It’s your color.

“What the ...?” I feel my face heating as I watch the YouTube video of me with bright blue eyeshadow and red lipstick. It’s already got hundreds of fucking views.

I stare at my soon-to-be-dead brother-in-law and roar, “Run, asshole.”

Grammy and my sister both shout and point at Melissa, “Watch your language,” but the asshole only throws back his head to laugh.

“Turnabout is fair play.” Seth shrugs, knowing there’s no way I will kick his fucking ass in front of my young niece.

“I’ll get you back,” I warn the asshole. “Just wait.”

“Baby, I’m home.” I walk in the door and call for my wife. Silence greets me, causing me to rush upstairs to look for Oakley.

“Oakley?” I open our bedroom door and find her sound asleep. I lean over and run my hand over her forehead, checking for a fever, and breathe a sigh of relief when I find her skin cool to the touch. Moose opens his eyes and gives me a little glare before rolling over and falling back asleep. Spoiled little shit.

“Hey.” Her beautiful eyes slowly open. “How was your day?”

“Everyone said to tell you hi and they miss you.” I sit on the bed next to her. “Baby, I can’t take it anymore. I’m about to come unglued worrying about you.” Standing, I walk over to the dresser and pull out a t-shirt and shorts for my wife. “I’m taking you to the emergency room.”

“No,” my stubborn wife resists. “Come sit on the bed so we can talk.” Fuck me. If this is something serious, I’ll lose my fucking mind.

“I’m okay.” Oakley snuggles into my embrace. “Your child is just giving me a hard time.”

“What?” I sit up and disturb both my wife and the fucking dog.

“I’m pregnant.” Oakley smiles widely. “I was trying to wait until after Quin delivers the baby before I said anything. I don’t want to steal her thunder.”

“I should spank your beautiful ass for scaring the shit out of me.” I pull my gorgeous wife close and kiss her soft lips.

“Don’t let me stop you.” She winks.

“I don’t want to hurt you.” I lay my hand across her soft stomach. “Or the little one.”

“You’re not going to hurt us.” She assures me. “There’s no way I’m going eight more months without a spanking or two, so pull up your big boy pants and get to it.”

She lays back on the bed, and I’m unable to resist the hunger shining in her bright blue eyes.

The dog grumbles when I kick him out of the bedroom, but I ignore the little shit. He should be used to this. After all, I throw him out at least once a day.

Three days later, my sister gives birth to not one but two little girls. “You poor fucker. Two girls,” I tease Seth while watching him rock one of the tiny infants.

“I wouldn’t give up any of my girls for anything in the world,” Seth mutters before running his finger down the baby’s little nose.

“Just you wait,” Grammy cuts in and warns me, “All this talk is going to come back to bite you in the rear end.”

“Not a chance,” I grumble playfully. Little do they know, I’d kill to have a miniature version of my wife. It kills me to keep Oakley’s pregnancy a secret from our family, but I know waiting and letting Quin have this day is the right thing to do. We can celebrate the newest Soracco addition once my sister and the babies are released from the hospital.
