And just like that we were all laughing. Full body laughs that came from deep in your belly. The kind you can only find with good, old, friends. The kind of laughter that was contagious. The kind of laughter that healed.

Hell, even Lucky stopped fighting long enough to grin at us. He looked like a kid, other than all the blood on his teeth. Then Drake slammed into him and they were rolling around in the dirt like a couple of morons again.

“Oh, must you?” Christine asked as the girls came out on the porch. “What happened?” She asked Callaway as he slung an arm around Molly and stage whispered “Aren’t you glad it’s not me?” Jussst loud enough for everyone to hear.

“Something happened with Dana,” Mac offered.

“Where is she?” Kaylie asked, looking around. Jan frowned and caught my eye. I jerked my head towards the path and she was off, leaving everyone else to watch the fight as the two idiots worked off some steam.

I wanted to follow my wife. Hell, I wanted my woman in eye sight all the damned time. I’d nearly lost her and I never wanted to feel that way again. I didn’t think my brain could handle it. My soul sure as shit could not.

Not even for a couple of minutes. Hell, I’d put a tracking device on her if she’d let me. Actually, that wasn’t such a bad idea… I would ask Cain about that. Or Vincent Margarelli. I’d heard that he did that with Francesca. I was surprised the man was still alive after a stunt like that.

Jan wouldn’t much like it either. She wanted me to trust her. And I did. The idea of adding a tracking device to her purse or wedding band was strictly for her own protection.

But at the moment, I needed to show her that I trusted her. There was a very low risk of her being harmed out here. We kept a close eye on the wild animal population. No human in their right mind would fuck around out here. My lady was tough as nails, and smart as hell to boot. She needed to handle this by herself.

I knew that Dana needed a woman in that moment. Not just any woman, either. She needed someone strong but empathetic. No nonsense. Caring, but not the sort to let you feel too sorry for yourself for too long. She needed a woman who would hug you silly and then slap your ass when it was time to let things go and get a move on.

She needed my Janet.

Some days, seemed like the whole damned world needed her. The kids, the club, the students and teachers at her dance studio. She was vital to the well being and happiness of so many people. She made the world a better place. Not just my world. The whole damned planet was lucky to have her on it.

I was beyond grateful to have had the chance to know her at all, let alone be loved by her. And that woman loved me hard. She didn’t hold back. She loved me with every fiber of her big hearted being.

One of a kind didn’t begin to cut it.

Not to mention, dat ass.

Every inch of her was gorgeous. It almost wasn’t fair. I couldn’t get enough of her. At the moment, I particularly wanted to take a bite out of that sweet peach of a behind.

I sent her a quick text to let her know. She was wearing cut off jean shorts that showed off those unbelievable dancers legs of hers. And her cute little tush had started filling in again, like it had after she gave me all our babies. I appreciated her gorgeous body either way, but a little extra cushion made me go wild in the sack. I felt like I could be a little rougher with her again from time to time. And the good lord knew, my woman loved it when I let go.

I tilted my head to watch until she rounded the corner on the path as it wove around Devil’s Lake. I waited until she was completely gone from view. With Janet it was always the same.

I hated to see her go, but I loved to watch her leave.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Janet

“Dana?” I called out as I rounded the bend in the path. I walked past Little Beach. My eyes widened when I saw that Drake had, in fact, broken the outer shell of a massive oak tree. I didn’t stop to inspect it, but that tree had taken a beating. I was pretty sure it was going to end up fire kindling, even though we didn’t actually burn wood out here, because of Christine’s daughter’s lung condition.

“Drake must have lost his goddamned mind,” I muttered to myself.

It took a very strong man to actually break a tree with his bare hands. Also, a very stupid one. Or one who was suffering. We’d hit the jackpot today. Drake was all three, I thought with fond exasperation.
