“Look at them,” Gabriel cooed at the kittens with a bright smile.

Adam smirked, shaking his head. At the moment, they resembled mice, with barely any fur, but he supposed that would change. Was he apprehensive? Sure. Would he still give Gabriel the world? Definitely, even if it meant once again getting comfortable with a furry critter in their house.

“Which one do you want?”

Harika grinned and clapped her hands, but it was the glow of pure joy in Gabriel’s eyes that stole all of Adam’s attention.

“Are you sure?” he asked, but already pointed to a solid black kitten tucked between its siblings. “This one.”

Harika slurped her coffee, but as her phone rang, she ran out into the backyard, leaving them alone with the animals.

Adam leaned in and kissed Gabriel’s cheek, stroking his back. “Why this one?”

Gabriel grabbed Adam’s hand and squeezed it. “I heard black cats are least likely to get adopted.”

“That’s terrible,” Adam whispered, mindful of the cat mom, who stared at them with a stern, if tired gaze.

Gabriel rose and attempted to crush Adam in his arms. “I thought I was going to have to coax you into it, so I made this cake.” He chuckled and pointed to an impressive two-tier topped with pieces of banana and swirls of white buttercream.

Adam chuckled and kissed the tip of Gabriel’s head, enchanted by the vanilla scent exuded by each strand. “You know I can’t deny you anything. Better tell me how you wanna call our new cat?”

Gabriel melted against him, pressing their lips together in another sweet kiss. “Abaddon?”
