“I haven’t even had this one yet.”

“Yeah, but I love making them. Maybe I should up that number,” he growled, squeezing my ass.

“Nope, but I sure as hell will let you practice,” I promised.

Twenty-two years later

Ghost

“Julian S. Martinez,” the dean called out. We had to hold our cheers, but I roared inside. My son was a doctor like his mother and grandfather, along with one of his many uncles. Grace and I held hands as we watched our son cross the stage and accept his future.

We couldn’t be prouder of the life we made.

He came to the stage to address the class as the top student in his program.

“As we enter the world of medicine, we all aim for being the best in our fields, but I have a strong legacy to live up to. Twenty-four years ago, my grandfather pulled a dying man out of the ocean, taking him to his daughter where they both worked to save his life. Less than a year later, that dying man held me in his arms and told me that he would always be there for me. My dad survived because of the dedication and heart of my mother and grandfather. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for their will and strength. Many of us have stories, reasons, and purposes that drive us to become doctors, and I hope that we never forget that. Congratulations, Doctors!”

The graduates and guests cheered as he took his degree and left the stage. Suddenly, he stopped in his tracks and then continued after being ushered down the row.

Once the graduates dispersed, we met up with our son, who spied around the entire area, freezing on one spot. I watched and knew exactly what happened. “Another bites the dust.”

“Who is she?”

“I don’t know, but I’m about to find out.” He sauntered in that direction, catching his fellow classmates’ attention. I recognized the guy from one of their vacations. We decided it was best to wait by the truck for him to come, but he didn’t take more than five minutes. “Hey. What happened? I thought you’d have her over your shoulder.”

“She’s Drake’s little sister. As in barely sixteen little sister. Shit. I have two whole years.”

“Good. In the meantime, you have a bunch of lives that will need to be saved,” Grace informed him.

“Yes, and then I’ll have money to support us.” I tried not to be offended because the boy had a trust I set up when he was little. He had over two million dollars in it like all his siblings, but then I remembered how much he wanted to be an independent man. “More power to you, son.”

“I’m going to marry Everly one day.” The look of determination on his face told me he most certainly would.

“He’s so your son.”

“Damn right. Do you think it’s too late to make another?” She laughed. “At least we can still try,” I teased, flipping her over my shoulder and carrying her to her side of the SUV.

“Put me down, you big caveman!”

“I’m just showing our boy how easily it’s done.”

“Noted,” he muttered. “Now can we get some food, because I’m starving.”

“Yep. Just like me.” I beat my chest, then set my woman on her feet before stealing a kiss. I’ll be forever grateful for my second chance.
