He starts inspecting an electrical control panel beside the back door and I take the opportunity to memorize his side profile.

His dark eyes look so focused. His powerful jaw, the slope of his nose, the perfect length of stubble on his skin, his tempting lips, the subtle dimple in his cheek—Fuck, he’s so hot.

And knowing he has a vicious grizzly bear hiding inside him who will fight to the death to protect me just makes him even hotter.

How can we be mates? He’s so out of my league, it’s laughable.

He’s like a real-life James Bond. Tall, dark, and handsome with a dangerous mysteriousness to him. He’s a real AFA agent and a damn good one if my grandfather promoted him to be the director, and he chose me? Of all people, I’m his mate? It doesn’t make any freaking sense.

He pries the panel off and then starts messing around with the colorful wires. The lock clicks open and he turns to me with a satisfied grin.

I just shake my head in awe as I walk to the door and push it open. “How the hell do you know how to do that?”

“Trade secrets,” he says as he follows me in. “I could tell you but then I’d have to kill you and I don’t want to do that. I’m sworn to protect you with my life.”

I laugh as I flick on the light. It’s exactly how I remembered it. Just a small stone room with a huge telescope in the middle of it.

If my memory serves me right, there’s an office in the back with a couch that one of us can sleep on. Or, maybe both of us will be on it by the end of the night. That thought gives me another warm shiver.

Cain closes the door and then leans on the wall. The look he gives me makes me swallow hard.

“You okay?” I ask in a timid voice.

He nods. “I’ve been so focused on trying to get us to safety that it never really sank in.”

“What?” I ask, even though I already know.

“You’re here. You’re actually here.”

“We’re really mates, huh?”

He nods as those dark sexy eyes annihilate me. They take all the strength out of my legs. He’s the most gorgeous thing I’ve ever seen.

I need him. Badly.

“I wasn’t sure if I’d ever find you,” he says as he watches me like he’s staring at something ethereal. Like he’s looking at an angel flying into the room. “And now that you’re here… I’m not sure if I believe it. It’s too good to be true.”

“I know what you mean,” I whisper. I’ve been thinking the same thing.

My grandfather is a bear shifter and when my grandmother explained to me what having a mate was like, I was so jealous. I wanted an intense love like the one she described. I wanted to be someone’s everything. I wanted someone to be mine.

Now, looking at Cain from across the room, I can’t believe that it actually happened. I can’t believe he’s here.

I want him to kiss me. I want to tell him that my lips are his. That he can do whatever he wants with them.

I lick them and then turn away with I see the desire in his eyes. It’s too much. It’s too unnerving. I don’t know what to do with myself next to a man like him.

“Want to check out the telescope?” I ask.

He looks like he wants to check something else out rather than a telescope, but he nods anyway.

“Last time I was here, I saw Saturn,” I say as I walk up the steps toward it. There’s a small landing at the top where you can hang out and peer into the telescope to see distant planets or stars that died millions of years ago. I remember lounging up there with my friends the last time I was here. Becca spilled some wine on the telescope, and we all burst out laughing as it harmlessly rolled off the metal exterior. It felt so light and carefree with my friends.

It feels a little different now as Cain Bradford steps onto the platform. The air charges with energy with our bodies so close. There was ample room for me, Becca, Tory, and Andrea up here, but it seems really tight with Cain’s large body taking up all the room. Or, maybe we’re using the tight quarters as an excuse to bring our bodies together.

“This is so cool,” he says as he looks at the giant telescope. “I look in here?”

I nod and swallow hard, watching every move he makes.

A whiff of his masculine scent fills my nose and I have to fight back a moan. He smells so good.

A deep throbbing is taking over my body. It started in my core and is now firmly planted between my legs. I can feel the wetness seeping out.
