“It was,” he interrupts, raising his eyes from the book to meet mine, the smile a full grin now. “It was the first thing that popped into my head when I had to come up with a name on the spot.”

I nod, holding my breath. Wondering what happens next.

“Liberty, I’m the one who owes you an apology,” he finally says, shaking his head as if to clear his thoughts.

“You do?”

He does?

“I should never have let you seduce me,” he says, but there’s a hint of a smile on his lips. I suck in a breath at how close he is, before looking down at the ground, unable to meet his gaze.

“Liberty, look at me.” He tilts my chin up with the tip of his finger, even bending a little to meet my eyes. “I’m sorry,” he says. But it doesn’t sound like a goodbye, it sounds like a new beginning. And then his mouth covers mine and I’m pressed against him. He leans into me, pressing my back into the door, and warmth spreads through me. This kiss is definitely a beginning.

“I should have made my feelings for you clear. I’ve been interested in more with you since the very first day,” he tells me between kisses. “I was going to call you the next day and ask you to dinner, but then you showed up at my door the next morning insisting on being professional—”

Fascinating. I put a hand on his chest to pause the kissing for just a moment. “When exactly did I win you over that first day? Was it when I accused you of recruiting me for sex work?”

“No, it was definitely when you let it slip that you told your last boss to go fuck himself.”

He’s kissing me again. And laughing.

I can’t hide my own smile when I wind my arms around his neck and pull him closer, thinking that maybe, just maybe, anything is possible in this city. Even forever.

The End
