That actually sort of . . . thrilled me.

I pocketed my phone and grabbed my wallet from my bed, attaching the chain to my belt loop before tucking it in my back pocket. Lacie rolled her eyes. “I have no idea how we’re best friends,” she grumbled. We really were polar opposites.

I grinned. “Because I’m fucking amazing.”

She laughed and lightly shoved me out the door before following behind me to head to her own dorm room. We’d wanted to room together, but I’d enrolled late, and there weren’t many options left open to me. Not to mention, Lacie had already been assigned a roommate.

When I got downstairs, Damien was waiting near the door, his eyes already on me. Girls were flocked around him, trying to get his attention, but his eyes were solely on me. Suddenly nervous, I walked toward him. I shoved my hands in my pockets, unsure what to do with them. The way he was staring at me was a bit unnerving while being thrilling all at the same time.

His lips twitched with amusement. “I’m guessing you didn’t get the memo that this was a date?” he asked, trailing his eyes over my worn jeans, sneakers, and the black t-shirt that read ‘your opinion matters, just not to me’.

I flashed him a look of mock annoyance, but he looked so damn delicious in his jeans and black, button-down shirt that it was hard to. “You get what you see,” I snarkily retorted.

This time, he full-on grinned and grabbed my hand in his. “You’re something else, darlin’,” he remarked as he led me out of the building. Parked out front was a shiny, black Camaro, and when he pressed the unlock button on his keys, the car lit up.

“This is yours?” I asked him in surprise. I knew he’d had a really expensive phone, but damn, he had an expensive car, too?

He nodded, opening the passenger side door for me. “All mine, darlin’. Hop in.”

I looked up at him. His eyes were a darker shade of blue than they’d been that morning and framed by even darker, thick lashes. There was something in his eyes—a darkness and some dominance that swirled together.

Run, my brain screamed at me.

Damien flicked his tongue out over his bottom lip as his gaze dropped to my mouth. My breath hitched in my throat. His lips tilted up the tiniest bit, making my heart race in my chest.

“Get in the car, darlin’,” he softly repeated, a velvety warning edge to his tone that should have frightened me.

Instead, stupidly, I got into the car.

And I was instantly surrounded by the scent of everything Damien: spice, smoke, and leather.

Dark, dangerous, and deadly.

When he slid into the driver’s seat and smoothly shifted his car into first, I was lost once again.

That voice in the back of my head spoke up again. You should have run.

Okay, the coffee was fucking spectacular.

“Are you going to dunk your face in it?” Damien asked me, watching me as if I’d lost my mind as I inhaled the scent.

“Coffee is my addiction,” I informed him. And it wasn’t a joke. Some people were addicted to drugs; others were addicted to alcohol.

I was addicted to coffee.

He snorted. “You know all that caffeine and sugar is actually really bad for you, right?” he asked me as if I gave a shit.

“My body,” I retorted.

He arched an eyebrow at me. “You so sure about that, darlin’?” Why was he calling me that all of a sudden? He leaned closer to tuck his index finger under my chin, tilting my head up so my eyes were forced to lock on his. “Because no woman of mine neglects her body in any way, shape, or form.”

“Woman of yours?” I asked him, hating that my heart was hammering in my chest. My mind was screaming at me to run all while my heart was pleading with me to let this man own me, to do whatever he wanted to me.

It was confusing.

He smirked. “You think I waste my time with women I don’t want something long-term with?” he asked me. My tongue flicked out over my bottom lip, and his eyes heated as he followed my lip until it disappeared back into my mouth. “You’ve got spark, a heat in your eyes that draws me to you. You’re passionate.” His own tongue flicked out over his bottom lip as he ran his eyes over me. “I want to see that passion displayed elsewhere.”

Oh, dear God, my ovaries.

He ducked his head, his intense, blue eyes locking on mine. Danger lurked in their depths, but something much more primal was there as well, staring back at me. It lured me in. I knew it was a trap of some kind. I didn’t know what, but I was too ensnared to care.
