I shook my head to clear it. Sex was off-limits right now, so I couldn’t be thinking those thoughts.

“I’m not saying no, Amy. I would never say no to you.”

“Okay, then,” she agreed easily. “We’ll talk later.” Then she yawned and rubbed her eyes, suddenly looking exhausted. It happened fast right now.

I lifted Maddie to my shoulder, then stood, helping Amy from the love seat. “To bed with you, Mrs. Fletcher.”

“I want to come downstairs and be with you,” she argued. “I don’t want to be up here alone.”

“Then you’re on the sofa and napping,” I bargained.

“I can do that.”

We went down the steps carefully, me holding Maddie with one hand bracing her close, and the other arm wrapped around Amy’s waist. She used the handrail for extra support.

“Sheldon called earlier while you were making the lasagna.”

“Where is he?”

“Somewhere in the Greek Islands.”

“Having a good time?”

“Yes.”

“How’s Ellie?”

“Married.”

I stopped on the stairs and stared at her. “What?”

“They got married yesterday on a beach in Greece.”

“Legally?”

“Yep. Witnesses and everything. He said they’d have a party when they got back.”

“Holy shit.” They had both been adamantly against marriage. Ellie said never again, and Sheldon scoffed, saying a piece of paper made everything change—and not for the better. Apparently, they had both had a change of heart.

“I know. He called and told my parents too. He sounds very happy.”

“So, when are they coming home?”

“In a couple of months. He wants to give Ellie a chance to see everything she dreamed of.”

“Who knew how far they’d come? How much their life would change when they met each other,” I mused. “Funny how you come here for one reason and end up finding your life. Me and you. Evan and Holly. Dylan and Alex. Now your brother and Ellie.”

“I know. It’s magic.”

I grinned and helped her off the last step, noticing another grimace. I guided her to the sofa, and after releasing Maddie to Mia’s waiting embrace, I helped Amy lie down, making sure she was comfortable. I bent and kissed her forehead. “It is,” I agreed. “Except I think you’re the magic one, Chippy. Now sleep, my tired wife. I have our girls, and I’ll watch over you.”

She smiled, her eyes drifting shut. “You always do.”

I stroked a few unruly curls off her face, and she sighed in pleasure, tucking one hand under her cheek. She resembled Maddie so much at the moment, it made my heart ache with tenderness.

This special, wonderful woman who, with her laughter, joy, and light, brought me back to life. Gave me a family. An unexpected chance at happiness. Brought me something I had never experienced before in my adult life. Peace.

My beautiful, free-spirted wife.

I pressed a kiss to her soft lips with a promise.

“And I always will.”
